  • Why Learn Kannada

Why Learn Kannada in Michigan

Earn the Michigan Seal of Biliteracy

Michigan’s Seal of Biliteracy recognizes graduates who are proficient in English and at least one world language, including heritage languages like Kannada.

Connect With Community and Heritage

Studying Kannada:

  • Deepens connection to family roots, traditions, and festivals.

  • Helps young people understand stories, values, and celebrations at a deeper level.

  • Strengthens community ties by preserving heritage language skills.

Earn Non-GPA Credit Toward Graduation

Under Michigan’s language flexibility policies, students may earn world language credit without impacting their GPA by demonstrating proficiency in a language such as Kannada.

This means:

  • Credit can count toward Michigan Merit Curriculum language requirements

  • It does not lower or affect a student’s grade point average

  • Heritage speakers can receive recognition for language skills learned outside school

This pathway supports the students who learn Kannada with Michigan Kannada Kali while still helping students meet graduation requirements.
